Don graduated from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Manitoba in 1959. He founded and built the internationally recognized company, Vector Construction, and has kept that company based in Manitoba. His company specializes in the remediation of concrete structures. His career as an engineer has been recognized on both the provincial and national level. In particular, Don has been named a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineers, the highest recognition for an engineer in Canada.
Don’s interest in structural performance made him and his company a natural champion of the SIMTReC Network of Centres of Excellence. Don has been involved with SIMTReC from the beginning and has served as the Chair of the Board since 1997. SIMTReC is arguably the most successful of all the Networks of Centres of Excellence established by the Canadian Government.
In addition to being one of the founding members of the Friends of Engineering, Don also served as the group’s interim Chair during its formation. Don has also served his /alma mater/ in a more direct manner, as a key player in fundraising for the Engineering and Information Technology Complex. Don chaired the Construction Subcommittee. He can be personally credited with raising over $1,000,000 for the campaign. In addition to helping to raise funds, Don’s generosity extended to his own gift that led to the naming of the high profile “Vector Vista”.
In 2005, the University of Manitoba recognized Don’s contributions with a Distinguished Service Award, and in 2010 he received an Honourary Degree.
