Welcome to the new Dean

The Friends of Engineering welcome the new Dean of Engineering at the University of Manitoba, Dr. Jonathan Beddoes, P.Eng.

Dr. Beddoes’ career includes industrial product and process development, research in industrial and government laboratories, as well as extensive experience in academia. Prior to joining our Faculty  he was a faculty member in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Carleton University for 18 years, including six years as Department Chair. He has taught engineering courses at all levels from first year to graduate studies. Before joining academia he worked at Pratt & Whitney Canada Inc., and Alcan Aluminium for ten years. His research interests have included high strength aluminum alloys for aircraft applications, casting and processing of aluminum for high value added sheet products, processing/recycling of Al-Si alloys, and high temperature materials for gas turbine applications. He is the (co-)author of more than 60 research papers, three patents and two books dealing with industrial processing of engineering materials.

The Friends of Engineering are looking forward to working with Dr. Beddoes to ensure the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Manitoba is the best engineering school in Canada.

Welcome to Manitoba, Jonathan!

Thank You, Doug Buchanan

The Friends of Engineering Board held a small luncheon on June 21 in honour of Dr. Douglas Buchanan to thank him for all his hard work during his year as Acting Dean of the Faculty of Engineering.  Dr. Buchanan worked tirelessly to promote and encourage the Friends of Engineering, and increased the level of cooperation and collaboration between the Faculty and the Friends.  Thanks, Doug.  Job well done!

Research Event a Success

Over 50 members and guests of Friends of Engineering came to the Faculty of Engineering on May 19th for a delicious lasagna dinner and to learn more about exciting research initiatives taking place.  Dr. James Blatz, Associate Dean, spoke on the Faculty’s Strategic Research Plan, and described how companies can take advantage of government funding to gain access to our researchers and research facilities.  Following the formal presentation, everyone was invited to take in a tour of one of four research labs.  Dr. Shawn Clark toured guests through the Hydraulics Laboratory to discuss Energy Systems, Dr. Lot Shafai took people through his Antennas Lab and discussed Information Technology and Communication, Dr. Zahra Moussavi toured folks through her Bio-Medical Lab to learn more about her research in sleep apnea, and early detection of alzheimer’s disease, and Dr. Nariman Sepehri toured guests through his Tele-operation & Robotics Lab.  All the tours were well attended and very much enjoyed.  It was decided that all future Friends of Engineering events that take place on campus should have opportunities for tours!

Our first mixer

140 in attendance for first Friends of Engineering Winter Mixer on February 17th. Thanks to all the Friends, Faculty, and Students who came out to our first Mixer. We heard from several engineering sectors on the job prospects and expectations, and many students made contacts and lined up interviews. We are looking forward to our next event in May. Stay tuned!
