This morning, Friends of Engineering Chair, Walter Czyrnyj, P.Eng., presented the Friends of Engineering Co-op/IIP Student of the Year awards to two outstanding engineering students.

The award not only requires the student to be in good academic standing, but this student must demonstrate personal and professional development received as a result of a co-op placement, make an outstanding contribution to the workplace while on a work term and advance the promotion of the CoOp/IIP to fellow students and professionals.

This year we had several very strong submissions for this award, which consists of a certificate of achievement and a $2,000 cash prize. In fact, we had two that were so good, the Board of the Friends of Engineering agreed that we needed to create an Honourable Mention category for the second place finisher. This second place finisher had such a positive co-op work experience at Standard Aero that he won their Standard Aero sponsorship award when his term came to a close. He was invited to maintain employment in a part-time capacity after returning to classes and represented Standard Aero at their Career Fair booth. The certificate of achievement as this year’s Honourable Mention of the CoOp/IIP Student of the Year was awarded to Josh Kimelman.

This year’s winner of the Friends of Engineering CoOp/IIP Student of the Year award is graduating after completing three different co-op work terms with two different employers, Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation, and Ledcor. These positions took him to Portage la Prairie and Notre Dame, Manitoba as well as Fort McMurray and Edmonton, Alberta. His experience in northern Alberta allowed him to work alongside the project management team to construct some of the largest mining infrastructure in the world. Upon his return to the U of M, he volunteered to promote the CoOp/IIP at new student orientation, and to be a campus ambassador for Ledcor. The 2015 Friends of Engineering Co-op/IIP Student of the Year is Marc de Rocquigny.

Congratulations to both of these outstanding engineering students!
